In late November 1941, six Japanese aircraft carriers, two battleships, and several other warships were set out for Hawaii. The Japanese government appeared to be continuing negotiations with the United States in good faith. American's, however, had decoded Japanese communications that made it clear that Japan was preparing to go to war against the United States. On November 27, American commanders at the Pearl Harbor naval base receiced a war warning from Washington, but it didn't mention that Hawaii might be a possible target. Because of the distance between Hawaii and Japan, officials doubted they would come that way. Japan's surprise attack on December 7, 1941, sank or damaged eight battleships, three cruisers, four destroyers, and six other vessels. It also destroyed 188 airplanes and killed 2,403 Americans. Another 1,178 were injured. This event brought the U.S. into the war.
